That’s a troublingly high number, one that seems to be rising year on year.

Why is this kind of uncertainty happening?

Two big factors come to mind.

  1. People still seem to think that nothing has changed in Sales. When I started selling, there was no internet, no mobile phones, no social media, no email, no PCs, no Microsoft Word, I could go on. Now at 53 I’m not a pensioner, I’ve been selling for 25 years, but the thing about sales is that it changes and so do we. Do you really think I still hand write letters like I did when I first started in sales? Of course not.

In fact as Keenan points out in his excellent new book, “Gap Selling” the top sales people are agents of change. Nobody sells anything without getting our clients to change and therefore we have to move with the times.

  1. To move with the times you have to get on social. I’m not going to make an argument for it as the argument has been won time and time again. I’m sorry but selling like it’s 1980 won’t crack it in 2019. The other thing that you have to get is that you won’t get Social Selling by reading HubSpot articles, you won’t get social selling by webinars and you won’t be a social seller by having your profile written.

Social selling means a change of mindset and that requires you to change what you are currently doing. Now, that doesn’t mean you have to do more, in fact social selling is more efficient and effective than legacy sales methods so you will end up doing less or doing the same, but making more money than before.

You won’t get these skills from reading Hubspot articles or watching webinars or having your profile written for you.

With 2019 upon us you can if you are not going to make your number, you can call up the recruitment consultants a job hop, again. Or you can learn a life skill that you and your team will have for the rest of your careers.
