Often we see people engaging on social and so often they are doing themselves no favours. In fact, they are often doing themselves damage. Social is no different from real life, you need to be courteous to people, say you pleases and thank yous. Here are 5 things are often see on Social are bad manners in real life as it is on social.

  1. Being Boastful – I know there is a thin line, you are very proud of that new verification, award etc and that is OK, but you should avoid too many boastful comments. A CEO said to me that such posts were “total bollocks” so i understand you are proud but for some people it just clogs up their feed.
  2. Not Saying Please and Thank you – I get so much feedback that just saying please and thank you has lead to conversations and then meetings. With so many people not doing this, it’s such a simple tip to get engagement.
  3. Slagging People / Job Roles Off – Being negative to people and posts is never seen in real life as positive. I’m a great believer that there are two types of people life. Those that radiate energy and those that suck your energy. You can see people slagging others off and they are the energy suckers.
  4. Using Sarcasm to Bully People – About 20 years ago I used sarcasm a lot, I thought it was funny. Then I went on a course and it was pointed out that sarcasm is a form of bullying. I stopped, but maybe I’m more aware of the sarcastic bullies because of this, you find a lot on social.
  5. Posting corporate rubbish – Yes I know you are passionate about your company and marketing is asking you to “social sell”. I’m sorry but stuffing your social profiles with with corporate content is not social selling. I’ve seen one sales person post about a conference they are attending. I’m sorry but I don’t care. A company has just posted that their new operating system is available, again, I don’t care. This person has posted a 15 minute video, with no context. Really? Do they really expect to sit here and watch a corporate video telling how great their company is? Sorry, I really, really don’t care.

There you go, 5 things that are a massive turn off on social. Be interesting, be insightful, be educational, tell me something I don’t know. And be polite, just like your mother told you to be, say please and say thank you!
