What Can Ivan Pavlov (and his dogs) Teach us About Social Selling?

If you didn’t know, Ivan Pavlov did experiments about conditioning on dogs.

He rand a bell and then fed the dogs, so much so that if he just rang the bell the dogs would

salivate.

Wikipedia states “Classical conditioning (also known as Pavlovian or respondent conditioning) refers to a learning procedure in which a biologically potent stimulus (e.g. food) is paired with a previously neutral stimulus (e.g. a bell). It also refers to the learning process that results from this pairing, through which the neutral stimulus comes to elicit a response (e.g. salivation) that is usually similar to the one elicited by the potent stimulus.”

It works the same in rats and humans.  Often we see that people are “hungry” not because they are hungry, but because it’s lunch time.

This is all very interesting, but we know about Pavlov and his dogs don’t we?  We don’t know about the Penn Professor, Edwin Twitmyer.

For those in the UK you may be sniggering as a “twit” is a slang term for an idiot, but this is a real person, not made up.

Edwin was actually do the same experiments on dogs as Pavlov and actually reached the same conclusion before Pavlov.  But, Pavlov had a better personal brand.

In fact, Twitmyer chose to end his paper with the words “just in time for lunch. I guess there won’t be any discussion of this paper.  Let’s go and eat.”

So there you have it, the difference between being Pavlov and being remembered forever or a being a Twitmyer.

Ironically, I finish this blog at lunch time and I’m off to eat.
