My last LinkedIn video is a good example of how to use LinkedIn and your network to “gear” you efforts and here’s the reasoning as to why you should.

It’s incredibly easy and the benefits can be (and usually are) huge.

So here’s a step-by-step walk through of what I did, how long it took and why you should do it too.

The steps I went through were:

  1. I shot a 2 minute video of me (on my iPhone’s front camera) using a flip-pad to describe how social selling works. 2 minutes because it’s short bought that most people will watch it all and with a flip-pad because it’s more visual. This took about 3 minutes.
  2. I dropped the video on to my Mac and trimed the ends (the bits where I’m starting and stopping the video) and exported as 480p (as this is amply good enough quality to use on LinkedIn and easier to upload a 40mb rather than a 1.5gb file). This took 2 minutes.
  3. I captioned the video (I use Zubtitle but there are lots of online tools for this). Captioning is important because if you’re in a coffee shop or on a train and you don’t have your headphones you will ignore a non-captioned video as there’s no learning in it for you. This takes about 4 minutes to do after you’re set-up an account and costs about $1/minute to do it.
  4. I upload (natively) to LinkedIn (important so that the algorithm doesn’t throttle-back visibility) wrote a (reasonably) catchy headline, add just three #hashtags and tagged some people who know/like me and usually share or interact with my content. This took 5 minutes
  5. Total 14 minutes (plus perhaps another 10 minutes of unearthing the flip-pad at home and finding the tripod to hold my phone. Total 24 minutes.
  6. I have a large(ish) and well engaged network so before long I had a few views/likes/comments and when this starts to happen you need to be diligent:
    • EVERY comment left gets a comment back from me tagging the person and thanking them for their comment (and perhaps encouraging further discourse) because this is just good manners.
    • Every comment is then liked by me (no less than an hour after I have responded) because this flags to the person that the thread is still active (and hopefully they will go back and re-engage)
    • Every share gets a comment thanking them for sharing, as again, this is just good manners.
    • Every person who has liked/commented/shared gets a personalised connection request saying something like “Thanks for liking my recent video about ***** perhaps we should connect” because I want to make sure that these people who have shown they like my content will see future pieces of content I share.

So, why would I do this in such a “process driven” manner?

I want to make sure that my content is seen by as many people as possible as I never know where the next client might be lurking. Each time you write a comment or like a piece of my content a percentage of people in your network see “{your name} has liked Adam Gray’s video”…and your audience might not actually know why I am and there’s a chance they might see this and then watch the video themselves.

Going viral. Erm…who knows. I have never had a piece of content “go viral” sadly (as you probably know, going viral is where the pace of spread of the content continues to accelerate achieving tens/hundreds of thousands or even millions of views relatively quickly) but all of my videos seem to get a similar kind of penetration.

Most of them seem to get between 5-10k views and generate about 75 comments and 75 likes each.

So, why does this make sense?

Well if you think back to earlier-on in this post I showed how creating this video took under half an hour. Assuming 10k views this means that 30 minutes of my time has been turned in to 14 days of continuous viewing. That’s a 670:1 multiplier of my efforts or to put it another way it’s equivalent of working 1 whole day and getting 3 years of work done.

As of 20 hours since posting the video has received 2250 views and had just under 100 comments/likes – that’s 30 minutes of my time converted to over 3 days of consumption and there’s absolutely no reason you can’t get the same…or better results than this!
