I’m standing in line waiting to get on my EasyJet flight back to London. We have been on holiday for the New Year vacation, back to work on Monday.

Just before we left the UK it was announced that the only large record shop in the UK went into administration. So what, you may say, do don’t buy physical assets in terms of music, well I do. I’m also part of a community of people on social media who do.

In the “old days” for me to do anything about this would have been difficult to say the least, but now anybody can be a disrupter.

The first thing I should mention is you may not know I’m a vinyl record collector, many people in the world of Social do. I recall in my first book “Social Selling – Influencing Buyers and Changemakers” available on Amazon I tell the story of my first call with the CEO of Nimble CRM software, Jon Ferrara.

We spent the first 15 minutes talking about vinyl, Jon’s collection is in his home office and he was very proud of a mint copy of “Live in Leeds” from The Who that he was very proud of. Anyway I digress.

I’m part of a private Facebook group called Now Spinning, there is also a website nowspinning.co.uk The Facebook group is a great place where we discuss new releases, share memories and more importantly share knowledge about music physical, streaming and products such as Sonus.

With the announcement of HMV going into administration we discussed the demise of physical asset music sales and the move to streaming. It was during this discussion that I had a thought, why don’t we crowdsource our ideas and write an open letter to the administrators. So we did.

Dear HMV Administrators – An Open Letter to the Owners of HMV

I’ve also sent a this to the senior management at the Venture Capital company who owns HMV, senior management at HMV and the administrator.

I could never have done this in the days of cold calling. Well I could have called researched and called the executives up, unlikely I would have achieved that sitting on a Saturday in Pathos airport in Cyprus. On social it took me 20 minutes, Cold Calling on a Saturday, would have go me nowhere.

Will this help HMV, I have no idea, time will tell?

Retail, as is all industries are changing, the power of social (twice the output at half the cost) is sweeping the world. While this is an example of investor power, your sales people can and should be using social higher and quicker than legacy sales methods.

Don’t let the old world sales gurus tell you nothing in sales has changed, it clearly has.
