This Spring The BIP is being held in Bassenthwaite in the Lake District in a lovely country house hotel. It is a two day immersion event where business owners and managers get to listen to some great speakers and take part in some fantastic exercises to help them not just develop and hone their business strategy but to help them understand the mechanics of making their businesses more successful…and there is the key differentiator from most business events I’ve seen. Let me elaborate.
Over the years I’ve been in business I have been to many business events as both a delegate and a speaker and it seems to be that all of the ones I have seen are either “strategic days” where the management do “blue sky thinking” collect abstract ideas about where their business could be and what it could do…or these sessions are a series of tactical tasks that need to be accomplished. But never both.
The reason I think this is unique…and important is that it’s all very well doing the planning and the strategic envisioning work but if you have no idea of how to deliver it and what the pitfalls are it will remain a dream ad nothing more. Likewise, s series of too tactical activities with ought any strategic vision to create a sense of direction are simply putting a sticking plaster on a problem rather than actually solving it. The BIP on the other hand is different because it is both.
Over the course of the two days the delegates get the chance to work on the vision for their companies and to then understand exactly what are the tasks which will help deliver this strategy. It’s brilliant, but so often overlooked.
The reason the BIP is able to do this is that the speakers are all people who have actually run successful businesses so they are speaking from experience rather than just from what they have read, or theories. I was fortunate enough to speak at the UK’s first BIP last year and the way that the event delivered both strategic vision and practical advice meant that all of the attendees were buzzing…and couldn’t wait to leave and implement what they’d learned in to practice.
I am delighted to be speaking again at The BIP on 18-19 May because, if it’s anything at all like the last one, it is quite a “magical” event. Business owners/managers get to see their vision crystallise and then get to develop and learn how they are going to make it happen and to be frank that’s a lovely environment in which to work – lots of smiling and empowered people.
